A Legacy in Wood: The Mare & Foal Door

This exceptional door tells a story – a story of a client’s love for their horses, a story of collaboration, and a story etched in wood. Commissioned by the Equine Reproduction Center of Central Florida, this double swing door isn’t just an entryway; it’s a personalized tribute to the special bond between a mare and her foal. The journey began with a simple picture – a snapshot of a beloved mare and her foal, captured in a moment of playful connection. This image, sent by the client, served as the inspiration and the blueprint for our design. From this, we developed a detailed sketch, translating the essence of the photograph into a design suitable for carving.

But translating a two-dimensional photograph into a three-dimensional carving presented some unique challenges. The photo, while capturing the essence of the moment, lacked the depth and perspective we needed to truly bring the horses to life in wood. We spent hours studying the photograph, sketching different angles, and even researching equine anatomy to ensure accuracy and realism in our carving. The foal’s playful stance, in particular, was tricky – we wanted to convey its youthful energy without making it appear unbalanced. Through careful measurements and adjustments to our design, we were able to capture the perfect sense of movement and lightness.

The heart of this door is the meticulously hand-carved depiction of the mare and foal. Carving by hands, we’ve captured the unique personalities of these horses. See how the mare’s gentle strength is reflected in her posture, while the foal’s playful energy is evident in its stance. Every detail, from the flowing manes to the delicate expressions, is brought to life through careful carving and attention to anatomical accuracy. The surrounding details are just as important. Notice the branching oak tree motif, flowing lines. These elements add depth and context to the scene, creating a harmonious composition that complements the central figures.
